Did you know that what we eat has an impact on our oral health? While most of us are aware of the effects of sugary foods on our teeth, there are some foods discussed in our blog post that may surprise you.

Tooth Decay

Most of us know that eating or drinking sugary foods can cause tooth decay. However, there is a lot of sugar in our diets that we are unaware of eating. The next time you are in your kitchen, take the time to check the list of ingredients in some of your children’s favorite foods.

Ingredients are listed on the side of the package in order of highest to lowest concentrations.  This means that if sugar shows up as the second or third ingredient, it may not be the best dietary choice to promote healthy teeth. While candy is an obvious offender to a nutritious well-balanced diet, even “healthy” breakfast cereals or yogurts can contain high amounts of sugar.

Staining

Did you know that certain foods stain your teeth? While the obvious offenders such as coffee and tea may not be applicable to children, there are still other foods to keep in mind. For example, drinking dark-colored soda can stain your teeth. The dark compounds in your child’s favorite soda brand can cause brown or yellow tooth discoloration.

While your children may be able to live with discolored baby teeth, it’s important to get them started on healthy eating habits now so that they can enjoy having beautiful smiles for the rest of their lives. Demineralization

Tooth demineralization happens when your tooth enamel loses a significant loss of minerals over a period of time. Specifically, demineralization happens when the pH in your mouth drops to 5.7. Eating sugary foods feeds the bacteria in your mouth and causes it to produce acid. This acid breaks down your enamel over time, inviting bacteria to invade your teeth and cause cavities.

In order to avoid the long-term effects of tooth demineralization, it’s important to take good care of your teeth by cutting out excess sugar in your child’s diet and making sure you schedule your child’s annual appointment with their pediatric dentist.

Tooth Sensitivity

Weakened tooth enamel can cause teeth to start feeling sensitive. Your child will notice this difference when they try to eat things that are hot or cold. If your child starts complaining of tooth sensitivity, be sure to monitor the situation. In some cases, mild tooth sensitivity can be treated by reducing their sugar intake or switching to a toothpaste formula for sensitive teeth.
